I had succinctly written about the responsibilities of teachers and on this page, I want to list out the responsibilities of a student. In any school environment, the teacher and the student (learner) have responsibilities. The purpose of any educational institution is to prepare all students to be knowledgeable individuals for the benefit of themselves and to society; empowering them to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing world.

I believe you know what responsibility is. However, why is student responsibility important? First, student responsibility is the key to all development and learning. Research has demonstrated that learning outcomes are tied to the effort that students put into their work and the degree to which they are involved with their studies and school life.

Contrary to popular belief, the first responsibility of a student is not Learning but to observe the Code of Conduct of the schoolObserving create a positive learning environment. Thus, students have a responsibility to their teacher, to their fellow students and to the school.

  • All students are responsible for their education
  • Take full advantage of the college resources available to them.
  • Avoid the use of abusive/disrespectful language. Such language negatively impacts the communication climate of the classroom and can establish a hostile learning environment.
  • All students are expected to treat all other students the same regardless of race, religion, colour, sex, age, disability, marital status, sexual orientation, or national integrity
  • All students are expected to be actively engaged in class. Students should avoid engaging in “other things” during the time allotted for the class including reading non-class materials, working on an assignment for another class, or using electronic devices to call, text or IM other parties.
  • Except otherwise stated, all students are responsible for bringing essential items (i.e., paper, pen, textbook) to class.
  • All students are responsible for completing their work by the pre-assigned deadline.
  • All students are responsible for keeping records of individual grades.
  • All students are responsible for informing the instructor if unethical/inappropriate behavior occurs (i.e., overhearing the use of discriminatory language, academic misconduct).
  • All students are responsible for seeking assistance to clarify course content and assignments.
  • All students are responsible for attending class regularly.
  • All students are responsible for arriving at class on time and staying until the remainder of the class period.
  • Avoid packing up to leave before the class is dismissed.
  • All students are responsible for notifying the instructor of any disability that might impede completing course requirements, including exams and assignments.
  • Respecting themselves and others.
  • All students are responsible for taking good care of school property.
  • All students are responsible for completing their homework assignments.
  • Reading on a regular basis.
  • Participating in classroom activities.
  • Participating in community and recreation programs.
  • Understanding parents’ values, expectations and culture.
  • Be open-minded to other students opinions
  • Maintaining good physical health, exercising, eating right, and getting enough sleep.
  • Listening carefully to teachers and parents.
  • Stay organized in the class
  • Treat the teachers and fellow students with respect
  • Developing positive attitudes; being cooperative and considerate.
  • Become an active learner, fully engaged in both intellectual and human growth
  • Co-operate with the teachers
  • Contributing to discussions and group activities.
  • Keep the school neat and clean
  • Dress appropriately
  • Take advantage of the amazing opportunity to meet new people, learn new things, and grow as a human being
