School Uniform by definition means a student outfit conforming to a school uniform policy which may include a dress code, dress of designated colours, or a reasonably designated uniform of a particular style worn primarily for an educational institution. They are common in primary and secondary schools in various countries.

The advantages of school uniforms far outweigh the disadvantages

  • School uniforms create a better learning environment at school. Students are not as distracted by how they look, and therefore, spend more time learning at school. The peer pressures of stylish dressing with the “best” brands are alleviated, especially when students may not wear any uniform pieces from name-brand companies.

  • School uniforms allow students to focus more on their schoolwork, rather than social appearances. Furthermore, the socioeconomic differences present among students are minimized when all students must wear the same school uniforms, no longer feeling the pressure to “fit in” with the right clothing choices.

  • School uniforms have reduced tardiness, skipped classes, suspensions, and discipline referrals among students. In addition, with the visual uniformity present across all students, the instance of school pride has increased. Similar to athletic team uniforms, proponents argue that dressing cohesively increases pride, unity, and a renewed commitment to the school. With uniforms, a more professional tone is set in a school, encouraging students to take their studies more seriously.

  • School uniforms reduce the prevalence of violence, which is a major concern for many schools. Outsiders are easily identified, and thus, do not pose a great threat to the students. Additionally, uniforms reduce the prevalence of “cliques” and gangs in school environments as students are required to only wear specific colours and uniform pieces.

  • School uniform has been reported to increase confidence and self-esteem amongst students. Contrary to the often-expressed opinion that students lose their sense of self-identification when required to wear
uniforms to school, the Nevada study showed 54 per cent of the students “agreed” or “strongly agreed”
that they still have their identities when they wear uniforms

  • Another advantage of school uniforms is that it ensures that students do not compete with one another over current fashion trends and fads, instead, uniforms would keep students focused on their educational goals. The uniformity would make it a level playing field among all of the students and force them to find alternatives for expressing themselves through their clothing.

  • An advantage of school uniforms is that there would be fewer issues with dress code violations, fights and muggings, sexual offences, and disciplinary referrals, and they would create a better learning environment. School uniforms will discourage criminal conduct and enhance student safety in public schools.

  • School uniforms improve attendance and possibly enhance school pride, administrators would be able to force the dress code and save valuable class time which can be taken away in instances of dress code violations, like in some cases in public schools where there isn’t a uniform policy.
