Is It Compulsory To Write NECO?

To be admitted into any university, you must first obtain the Secondary School Certificate Examinations (SSCE). You can obtain an SSCE by passing exams administered by either the Western African Examinations Council (WAEC) or the National Examinations Council (NECO). You can also obtain both.

So, is NECO compulsory? The answer is NO. If you have written or preparing to write WAEC, you can decide not to write NECO.

If you have written NECO, you can decide not to write WAEC. Unfortunately, the WAEC examination is written before NECO and has been made mandatory for students. If, however, you are not opportune to write WAEC due to constraints, you can sit for NECO. This simply means you have the choice of either writing the two exams WAEC and NECO or just one of them.

The benefit of writing both WAEC and NECO is that you stand a better chance of passing all required subjects without the need to resit the following year if peradventure you failed a core subject. This means, if there was a subject you did not write well in WAEC, you can make up for it in NECO. Learn more here

The National Examination Council (NECO) is the Nigerian examination board responsible for conducting the SSCE for senior secondary school students. NECO was established by the Nigerian government as an alternative to WAEC. NECO conducts SSCE examinations only in Nigeria.
