Why you must stop looking for – Best Universities in Nigeria

While Googling for some information, I saw a web page titled best universities in Nigeria and it caught my attention. I went through the list thoroughly and wasn’t happy because I saw what I expected but I wasn’t convinced that the information within the websites I visited was right.

So I went straight to the sources to know how and where the data used for ranking the best universities in Nigeria came from. Believe me,  though they claimed not to be biased I feel they really do not have the necessary data to rank any university “best” in Nigeria. None of them should and besides, each of this websites has its own ranking of Nigeria universities- there is no uniformity.

Unirank claimed to use some kind of Web MetricOur aim is to provide a non-academic League Table of the top Nigerian Universities based on valid, unbiased and non-influenceable web metrics provided by independent web intelligence sources rather than data submitted by the Universities themselves.

Webometric claimed to provide reliable, multidimensional, updated and useful information about the performance of universities from all over the world based on their Web presence and impact.

My friend once told me that his barber was the best in the whole of my immediate environment (where there are more than 200 active barbers). I asked him with a straight face ” why did you say that” he said because he cut his hair very well and at a cheap price. I retorted, my personal barber cut my hair well at a high price but I dare not say he is the best.

I asked him if he had tried other barbers and he replied “no”, Immediately, I cautioned him not to repeat that fact because it is wrong. I can only accept his statement if all the barbers had cut his hair more than three times and in a different style.

The only way to know which Nigeria universities is top amongst others is through thorough comparison. That is, each university are compared head to head one after the other like a football club

Universities should be compared head to head by using the following

  1. Compare the faculty standard
  2. Compare each university’s department standard
  3. Compare lecturers and non-teaching staff qualifications
  4. Compare labs and teaching aids
  5. Compare Libraries and Library use
  6. Compare teaching style/techniques
  7. Compare the learning environment
  8. Compare I.T
  9. Compare admission process
  10. Compare research work
  11. Compare the numbers of first class graduates
  12. Compare hostel accommodation
  13. Compare the school transportation system

You see, what’s best in the University of Ibadan may the worst in Delta State University, Abraka. A student may choose to study Mass Communication at the top 10 universities in Nigeria but unfortunately, because the ranking algorithm is not solid, the best university to study mass communication may never be at the top list.

To get a good ranking that will help students make a decision; since most of them want to study at the best university, the University of Ibadan, for example, must be compared with every known university in Nigeria head to head and vice versa and not some random facts and figures or web metrics. Using head to head comparison will provide enough data not only for ranking but also detailed information which may be necessary for the student when making a decision on the course of study and the university to choose.

My advice to students looking for the best universities in Nigeria is this…. Look, know, but don’t base your decision on this information because it is a wrong move.

This is why I’m very careful not to publish the list of best universities to study a particular course when I know that such claims are not genuine unless I visit each school and compare them head to head.

I have seen my blog and websites claiming to have the list of top Universities in Nigeria by NUC.

National Universities Commission (NUC) does not rank Universities in Nigeria

Candidate students should use additional criteria if they are trying to choose a university. Webometrics ranking correlates well with the quality of education provided and academic prestige, but other non-academic variables need to be taken into account.
