WAEC subject combination (requirements) for Home Economics

The subjects needed to study Home Economics in WAEC must contain five (5) credit. This subject combination is also applicable to NECO AND GCE… The O level requirement, that is, the required WAEC subject combination for Home Economics (faculty of Agriculture) must include

  1. Chemistry
  2. Biology/Agric Science
  3. Mathematics
  4. Physics
  5. English Language and any one of Nutrition, Fine Arts, Textile, Construction, Technical Drawing, Basic Electricity, Basic Catering and Food Services, Bakery and Confectioneries, General Metal Work, Men Garment Construction and Finishing, Spinning, Weaving, Surface Design and Printing, Bleaching, Dyeing and Finishing, Ladies Garment Construction and Finishing.
  6. A trade subject


JAMB UTME subject combination (requirements) for Home Economics 

Knowing JAMB subjects for Home Economics is not enough. You should aim for a score of 180 – 200 and above in JAMB UTME to be on a safe side (Just a piece of advice) because anything short of that may deny you of Admission/Post UTME. Of course, if you have a score below 180, you can consider College of Education or Polytechnic… Please note – JAMB is not the only option for admission. Home Economics is how many years course and under which faculty?

Depending on your mode of entry, Home Economics is a three to four years course in Nigeria. According to JAMB, this course is under Faculty of Agriculture but may be under a different faculty in some universities.

Can a commercial or art student study Home Economics

No! Home Economics under agriculture is a science course and not suitable for commercial or art student. But if you have required subject combination in your O level result, you can go for it if that is the course you desire to study. If you’re still in secondary school, you may find it difficult to change subjects during WAEC registration because your schools may go against it. The alternative way to write the required subjects combination for Home Economics is through GCE.

What is Direct Entry Special Consideration (Waiver) to study Home Economics
(i) University of Uyo accepts (upper credit) and HND (lower credit) and NCE (merit) in relevant fields plus UTME requirements.

(ii) Michael Okpara University of Agricultural Umudike – As in Agriculture. Also accepts SRN/NRN or NCE with Distinction.

(iii) Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife (OAU) – accepts NCE in Home Economics/Biology/Chemistry/Agric Science with five merit/credit passes in TC II in the following subjects: Social Studies, Maths, Agric Science, General Studies, Fine Arts, Geography and Rural Science.

(iv) University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) requires at least ‘A’ pass in Physics, accepts NCE holders with relevant five ‘O’ level credit passes. University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) accepts candidates with a pass in Biology, but who have credit in Agric. Science, Food & Nutrition / Home Management may be considered

(vii) Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) accepts ND (minimum of upper credit) and NCE (minimum of Credit) in Hospitality and Tourism, Catering Management, Hotel Management, Home Economics from a recognized Institution in addition to UTME requirements.

What is WAEC, NECO, GCE, Special Consideration (Waiver) to study Home Economics
(i) Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife (OAU) accepts Physics, Geography. Home/ Management., Statistics. Economics, B/Studies, Zoology, Commerce or any of the following pairs Chem & Biology., Chemistry & Agriculture & Chemistry & Economics.

(ii) University of Uyo accepts five merit passes in TC II in relevant subjects.

(iii) Michael Okpara University of Agricultural Umudike (a) For Home Economics – Same as in Agriculture. (b) For Hotel Management and tourism, it requires five O’ level credit passes to include English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry and any of Physics, Economics and Government.

(iv) University of Agriculture, Makurdi accepts P7 in English Language.

(v) University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) requires at least a pass in Physics and Biology.

(vi) Bells University of Technology, Otta as in Food Science and Technology.

(vii) Osun State University Osogbo (UNIOSUN) requires Five ‘O’ Level credit passes in the SSCE or its equivalent at not more than two sittings in addition to an acceptable credit pass in the UME.

(viii) Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) REQUIRES five (5) credits passes in English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology and Physics.

(ix) Cross River State University of Science &Technology, Calabar (CRUTECH) accepts one Social Science subject (Economics or Accounting/Commerce) in place of Food and Nutrition/Home Economics.

What is JAMB UTME Special Consideration (Waiver) to study Home Economics
(i.) Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) requires Chemistry, Biology and Physics or Mathematics.

(ii.) Cross River State University of Science &Technology, Calabar (CRUTECH) accepts one of Economics, Accounting or Commerce in place of Food and Nutrition/Home Economics.
