Petroleum Engineering Course Description

Before you consider the JAMB UTME subject combination (subjects to write in jamb) to study this course, it is good you know what this course is all about. Petroleum engineering is an engineering discipline concerned with the activities related to the production of hydrocarbons, which can be either crude oil or natural gas. Subsurface activities are deemed to fall within the upstream sector of the oil and gas industry, which are the activities of finding and producing hydrocarbons.

Students will learn about petroleum geology and geophysics which focus on the provision of a static description of the hydrocarbon reservoir rock, while petroleum engineering focuses on estimation of the recoverable volume of this resource using a detailed understanding of the physical behaviour of oil, water and gas within porous rock at very high pressure.

The duration of the course is four/five years and it may be offered by certain institutes on a correspondence basis as well. After the completion of the course, the candidates are given a lot of job opportunities in the petroleum sector.
Please note this

  • If you want to pursue a career in petroleum engineering you should be aware that the job of a petroleum engineer is not restricted to air-conditioned offices.  Most petroleum engineers have to work in the fields except those responsible for analyzing the reports and recommending the field engineers and advising corporate decision-makers on whether to proceed.  Therefore, the field engineers should have to be mentally as well as physically strong enough to endure long-distance travel, long stays and to bear uncertain weather conditions.  Besides, petroleum engineers have to work with a team of geologists and contractors, which is why they should also possess strong and effective communication skills.
  • Petroleum engineers search the world for reservoirs containing oil and natural gas. On discovery of these resources, they communicate with geologists and other specialists to understand the geologic formation and properties of the rock containing the reservoir, determine the drilling methods to be used, and monitor drilling and production operations.
  • Petroleum engineers design equipment and processes to achieve maximum and profitable recovery of oil and gas. They rely heavily on computer models to simulate reservoir performance using different recovery techniques.
  • Also, graduates can go for their Masters’ degrees for teaching purposes.
