No. Social Work is one of the oldest degrees in the world with fewer job roles to explore. A person working as a Social Worker in Nigeria typically earns around 104,000 NGN per month. Salaries range from 55,000 NGN (lowest) to 158,000 NGN (highest).

WAEC Subject Combination For Social Work

In WAEC, NECO or GCE, you are expected to register a maximum of 9 subjects for a Social Work degree. You can register for less than 9 subjects if you are resitting.

However, you must have at least 5 credit passes amongst the 9 subjects listed below before you can gain admission into any Nigerian university to study for a Social Work degree.

Where can I work with a Degree in Social Work? 
The Bachelor of Social Work equips you to work in a wide range of areas related to the provision of welfare services. Potential roles include community services project officer, case manager, advocacy worker, mental health worker and social research officer.

Social workers are employed in government departments, hospitals, health and community centres, correctional services and welfare agencies. Social workers may work for the government and non-government sectors in a large project and policy-based positions.

Depending on your mode of entry, Social Work is a three to four years course in Nigeria. According to JAMB, Social Work is under the Faculty/School/College of Social and Management Studies but may be under a different faculty in some universities.

Can a science or art student study Social Work?

Yes! If you are a Science, Commercial or an Art student, you can study Social Work at the university provided you have the required subjects combination in your O level result. If you’re still in secondary school, you may find it difficult to change subjects to fit your desired course during WAEC registration because some schools may go against it.

Also, during WAEC or NECO registration make sure you know which subjects are been registered for you because some secondary schools are ignorant about the importance of O level requirements for university courses. Another alternative way to register the required subject combinations for Social Work is through GCE.

 

Now I am confident that you know the compulsory subjects needed to study Social Work at WAEC. But note this — Some Universities may accept D7 or E8 in some a compulsory subjects instead of Credit. And some may accept or reject two sittings. That is combinations of WAEC, NECO, or GCE results.

Special Consideration to study Social work

  • University of Lagos (UNILAG) requires credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, and any two of Economics, Government/History, Civic Education and Geography and one of Literature-in-English, CRK/IRK, any Nigerian Language and Biology.
  • The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) requires Five O’ level credit passes which must include English Language and any three Arts or Social Science Subjects.
  • Redeemer’s University, Mowe requires Five ‘O’ Level credit passes to include English Language, Mathematics and three subjects in Social Sciences or Arts.
  • University of Calabar (UNICAL) same as in Sociology.
  • University of Benin (UNIBEN) requires five O’ level credit passes to include English Language, Mathematics, Economics, Government, Geography or any other Social Science subject.
