WAEC Subject Combination For Pharmacology

In WAEC, NECO or GCE, you are expected to register a maximum of 9 subjects for a Pharmacology degree. You can register for less than 9 subjects if you are resitting.

However, you must have at least 5 credit passes amongst the 9 subjects listed below before you can gain admission into any Nigerian university to study for a Pharmacology degree.

In Nigeria, if you gain admission to study a Pharmacology degree course at the university through JAMB UTME, you will study Pharmacology for five years. If you gain admission through direct entry, you will study this course for four years. And of course, there is room for more years if you have an extension; the aftermath of carryover courses.

Can a science or art student study Pharmacology?

No! If you are a Commercial or Art student, you can’t study for a Pharmacology degree course at the university. This is a pure science course. But if you are good with Science subjects, you can take your chances I won’t discourage you provided you have the required subjects combination in your O level result. If you’re still in secondary school, you may find it difficult to change subjects to fit your desired course during WAEC registration because some schools may go against it.

Pharmacology Course description:

Pharmacology course provides a modern understanding of how medicines produce their effects on the body and how such knowledge is used to alleviate the suffering caused by a disease. In this course, you’ll learn how common drugs target specific receptors in body tissues, exerting effects as either agonists or antagonists.

You will also explore the major biochemical pathways that are activated when drugs interact with their respective receptors. Other key topics include pharmacokinetics, drug metabolism, drug dependence, toxicology, pharmacogenomics and drug discovery. This course provides an appreciation of how drugs produce changes in such key bodily functions as blood pressure, lung performance or pain perception.

Pharmacology is a cousin to Pharmacy. While the latter focuses more on a patient and their treatment with the use of prescribed drugs, Pharmacology prefers to know how these drugs act when they get into the body, what they do inside, how they are metabolized, and how they exert toxic effects. This led to the development of new drugs or improvements on readily available ones.
