Now, many people mistake qualities as been the same with characteristics. Just the same way they equate qualities and skills. These terms are not the same. On this post, I will share with you the basic characteristics of a good teacher. I used the word basic because characteristics differ from one person to the other. No two individuals are the same.

Since teachers deal with humans and not machines, there some basic characteristics that every good teacher should exhibit irrespective of their location, qualification, gender, ethnicity or social status. Characteristics of a teacher can be observed which makes them unique. But why are these basic characteristics of a teacher important?

Characteristics of a good teacher will enable them to enjoy meaningful relationships with their students and parent based on openness, honesty, and mutual respect. Moreover, these basic characteristics can help teachers succeed in difficult tasks associated with teaching, achieve set goals and overcome challenges and obstacles they encounter.

Approachable:
This is one of the basic characteristics of a good teacher as no student will like to interact with a teacher who is not approachable. As teachers, social interaction is essential to education. By being more approachable, you encourage your children to ask questions which opens lines of communication in your classroom. Furthermore, you’re showing your students that you’re passionate about what you’re teaching them and how they learn from your lessons.

Confidence:
A high school student can easily tell if a teacher has confidence or not. They are quick to spot a lack of confidence and neither can you separate a teachers’ confidence from the success of student ability to learn. Confidence is one of the basic characteristics of a good teacher because confidence would have a positive impact on his or her students’ achievement, attitude, affective and even socio-emotional growth.

Focus:
Focus is one o the best characteristics of a good teacher. Focus is the key to success and happiness in the teaching career. Being focused means being able to pay attention to your plan and control the everyday distractions. The most successful teachers on this planet are highly focused. They pay attention to the present moment and present tasks. This characteristic ensures teachers are fully engaged in activities, get more done properly and deal with adverse life events better.

Respect:
Respect is reciprocal. In a respectful learning environment, teachers and students are more engaged and productive. Else, there would be report more conflicts, misunderstandings, absenteeism, and lower productivity. When students receive respect from their teacher, they are less stressed and more apt to apply themselves diligently to their class activities.

Creative:
Hello! I am not referring to the creativity of class activities but as one of the best characteristics of a good teacher. Creativity is paramount to successive learning. Working diverse personalities, teachers ability to identify students skills, strengths and weakness and uses that knowledge to build a distinctive learning pattern for individual students will succeed.

Optimistic:
A good teacher must be optimistic about the success of his/her student. According to a study, there appears to be a link between a teacher’s attitude and student success. A teacher with an optimistic character is one who believes that every student in the class should succeed academically. With an optimistic teacher, students feel encouraged and motivated. This characteristic is mandatory!

Admit Mistake:
Admitting a mistake is a character trait that should be found in all teachers. A good teacher is not infallible. Thus, mistakes are part of success in the quest to teach and perform at the best of their abilities. When a teacher admits and correct mistakes, it increases credibility, strength, and trust.

Never Stops Learning:
A good teacher who never stops learning will live a fulfilling life and having a successful career. This is a character trait that all teachers should possess. Continuous learning helps teachers to expand their skills and enjoy professional development which improves their teaching performance.

Thus, continuous learning is about expanding your ability to learn by regularly upgrading your skills and increasing your knowledge. As noted on the University of Guelph website, Strong continuous learning skills are required to successfully adapt to changing work and life demands.
