When some students hear “Colleges”, they think it’s all about Colleges of Education, but that’s far from the truth. There are College of Theology, College of Technology (Technical), and Bible Colleges.
What is the difference between Colleges and Universities? Colleges in Nigeria especially Colleges of Education where establish to train teachers who will teach pupils in the secondary and primary schools across the country while the university is an institution that offers undergraduate and graduate degrees across all disciplines including educational courses. Universities also offer graduate programs leading to a master’s degree or a PhD.
Colleges of Education programmes normally extend over a period of three or four academic years. 3-year NCE programme if you were admitted through Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and 4 years for students admitted into the preliminary programme. The first year will be spent in the College to prepare you for UTME examination which you must pass to qualify you for three years regular programme.
Note, not all colleges of education offer a preliminary programme. College student obtains NCE Certificate at the end of the college programme while university student who also studied education-related courses obtain a Bachelor of Education (B. Ed.) at the end of their university programme.
