WAEC subject combination (requirements) for English and Literary Studies

You’re expected to have at least 5 credits on the required WAEC subject combination needed to study English and Literary Studies in Nigeria universities.

The required subject combination (o level requirement for English and Literary Studies) must include:

  1. Literature in English
  2. English Language.
  3. A trade subject

The above WAEC subject combination is also applicable to other O’level examinations such as NECO and GCE. So now that you know the compulsory O level requirement to study English and Literary Studies, let also look at UTME and Direct requirements and course descriptions.


JAMB UTME subject combination (requirements) for English and Literary Studies

Prepare yourself well so you can score above 200 in JAMB UTME to be on a safe side (Just a piece of advice) because anything short of this score may deny you Admission/Post UTME. Of course, if you have a score below 180, you can consider College of Education or Polytechnic

Please note – JAMB is not the only option for admission. If you’re having troubles JAMB UTME maybe it’s time you pass through IJBM, JUBEB, ND or Predegree.

JAMB UTME subject combination (subject to register in jamb) to study English and Literary Studies are

  1. Lit.-in-English
  2. One other Arts subject
  3. Another Arts or Social Science subject


Direct Entry requirement (required A-level result) to study English and Literary Studies
Two ‘A’ level passes to include Lit.-in-English and one other Arts subject.

Special Consideration

Some Universities may accept D7 or E8 in some a compulsory subject instead of Credit. And some may accept or reject two sittings. That is combinations of WAEC, NECO, or GCE results. Special Consideration

What is Direct Entry Special Consideration (waiver) to study English and Literary Studies
(i) University of Calabar (UNICAL) accepts NCE with English Literature as teaching subject.

(ii) University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) accepts NCE in English in with not lower than C grade (merit) in addition to UTME Entry requirements.

(iii) University of Abuja, Gwagwalada – as in English Language.

(iv) Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife (OAU) same as in English Language

(v) Osun State University Osogbo (UNIOSUN) accepts Two ‘A’ level passes to include Literature in English and other Arts subjects or NCE in English/Political Science

(vi) Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria accepts (a) Two ‘A’ level papers including English at IJMB/ NCE (b) General English/Use of English at NCE satisfies’ O’ level English requirement subjects.

(vii) Niger Delta University Yenagoa (NDU) requires a pass in English Literature at the Advanced level GCE/or the Principal level in the HSC Examination, or merit at the NCE, and a pass in at least other Arts subject.

(viii) Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba accepts ND in Mass Communication Upper credit. Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba does not accept NCE.

(ix) CHRISTPHER accepts HND, ND or NCE with credit passes in the relevant subjects

What is Waec, Neco, Gce Special Consideration (waiver) to study English and Literary Studies
(i) Covenant University Ota requires five ‘O’ level credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Literature in English one Science subject from Biology, Health/General Science, Agric. Science, Physics and Chemistry and one from Science or Arts. Social Science such as Geography, Economics, Government, Commerce, Principles of Accounts and Book Keeping. Arts subjects such as Bible Knowledge, History etc

(ii) Kaduna State University, Kaduna (KASU) accepts only subjects from Arts or Social Science

(iii) Niger Delta University Yenagoa (NDU) requires five ‘O’ level credit passes in English, Literature in English and any other three subjects, two of which must be Arts subjects.

(iv) University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) requires a Science subject.

(x) Kogi State University Anyigba and Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria require five O/L credit passes to include English Language, Literature in English and three other subjects in Arts or Social Science.

(xi) Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, Ekiti State also requires credit pass in one Science subject and at least a pass in Mathematics.

(xii) Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba requires five ‘O’ level credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Literature in English one arts subject and one other arts or social science.

(xiii) Christopher University Mowe – Maximum of two sittings.
