WAEC Subject Combination For English and Literary Studies
In WAEC, NECO or GCE, you are expected to register a maximum of 9 subjects for an English and Literary Studies degree. You can register for less than 9 subjects if you are resitting.
However, you must have at least 5 credit passes amongst the 9 subjects listed below before you can gain admission into any Nigerian university to study for an English and Literary Studies degree.

English and Literary Studies Course Description
English and Literary Studies gives you a unique opportunity to develop your reading, writing and thinking skills through the study of literature, film and television, and through producing your own creative writing. This course is designed to get you reading books, analyzing theories, critiquing prose and verse, and taking a more critical look at the signs and words surrounding us every day.
The aim is to get students thinking creatively and analytically about the English language; this differs from other modern language degrees as it is intended for students already proficient in written and spoken English
Objectives
- To train students to acquire adequate communicative competence in both the spoken and written varieties of the English language, thereby giving them a good grounding and effective mastery of the language in its various applications in order to achieve adequate self-expression and self-actualisation.
- To equip the students with the knowledge of the forms and features of the varieties of the English language used in different domains such as business communication, legal communication, electronic broadcast media, print journalism, advertising and sports commentaries, book publishing and writing.
- To equip the students with adequate linguistic knowledge of the English language through a detailed study of its sound system, lexicon, its syntax, its semantics and usage.
- To adequately prepare the students to pursue postgraduate studies in English language and linguistics, and to take up teaching and research at the appropriate level of education.
- To orient students towards self-employment by a presentation of special programmes on radio or television, and other kinds of original output through independent thought, inventiveness and creativity.
- To produce graduates who possess an informed literary and aesthetic sensibility and intellectual tools to appreciate any literary stimulus and event.
- To equip students with adequate knowledge of major landmarks in literature-in-English in all genres and periods.
- To produce skilful and eloquent users of English for literary and artistic creativity.
- To impart a humanistic perspective to students by acquainting them with literature as an expression of lofty ideals and aspirations, to stimulate in the students the aptitude for creativity and innovation in the exploration of investment opportunities in the culture and art industry.
Now I am confident that you know the compulsory subjects needed to study English and Literary Studies in WAEC. But note this — Some Universities may accept D7 or E8 in some compulsory subjects instead of Credit. And some may accept or reject two sittings. That is combinations of WAEC, NECO, or GCE results.
Special consideration (waiver) for English and Literary Studies
- Covenant University Ota requires five ‘O’ level credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Literature in English one Science subject from Biology, Health/General Science, Agric. Science, Physics and Chemistry and one from Science or Arts. Social Science such as Geography, Economics, Government, Commerce, Principles of Accounts and Book Keeping. Arts subjects such as Bible Knowledge, History etc
- Kaduna State University, Kaduna (KASU) accepts only subjects from Arts or Social Science
- Niger Delta University Yenagoa (NDU) requires five ‘O’ level credit passes in English, Literature in English and any other three subjects, two of which must be Arts subjects.
- The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) requires a Science subject.
- Kogi State University Anyigba and Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria require five O/L credit passes to include English Language, Literature in English and three other subjects in Arts or Social Science.
- Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, Ekiti State also requires a credit pass in one Science subject and at least a pass in Mathematics.
- Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba requires five ‘O’ level credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Literature in English one arts subject and one other art or social science.
- Christopher University Mowe – Maximum of two sittings.
