WAEC subject combination (requirements) for Igbo

You’re expected to have at least 5 credits on the required WAEC subject combination needed to study Igbo in Nigeria universities. These subjects combination are also applicable to other O’level exams such as NECO AND GCE. The required WAEC subject combination (O level requirement) for Igbo must include:

  1. Igbo Language
  2. English Language
  3. Any other Arts subject

JAMB UTME subject combination (requirements) for Igbo

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) is a body responsible for your admission into the University or other institutions. Is Igbo Language Compulsory In WAEC?

Direct Entry requirement (required A-level result) to study Igbo

If you’re one of those seeking admission into the University to further your studies, in addition to the required WAEC subjects combination for Igbo, you are expected to have;
(i) Two ‘A’ level passes in Igbo and one Arts/Social Science subject.
(ii) NCE in Igbo and one Arts subject

If you have your O level result already and the subjects you have is not the same with the admission requirement that is the required O level subject combinations to study Igbo, don’t give up. Igbo is how many years course?

In Nigeria, if you gain admission to study Igbo degree course at the university through JAMB UTME, you will study Igbo for four years. If you gain admission through direct entry, you will study this course for three years. And of course there is room for more years if you have extension; the aftermath of carryover courses.

Can a science or commercial student study Igbo?

Yes! If you are a science or a commercial student, you can study Igbo at the university provided you have the required subjects combination in your O level result. If you’re still in secondary school, you may find it difficult to change subjects to fit your desired course during WAEC registration because some schools may go against it.

Also, during WAEC or NECO registration make sure you know which subjects are been registered for you because some secondary schools are ignorant about the importance of O level requirements for university courses. Another alternative way to register the required subject combinations for Igbo is through GCE.

Special Consideration

Now I am confident that you know the compulsory subjects needed to study Igbo in WAEC. But note this — Some Universities may accept D7 or E8 in some a compulsory subject instead of Credit. And some may accept or reject two sittings. That is combinations of WAEC, NECO, or GCE results.

What is Direct Entry Special Consideration (waiver) to study Igbo
(i) University of Ibadan (UI) accepts NCE to include Igbo and another Arts or Social Science subject at merit /credit level. Accepts also At least 2 ‘A’ level pass to include Yoruba and another Arts or Social Science subject.
(ii) University of Lagos (UNILAG) requires not less than grade ‘D’ in ‘A’ level or NCE in Igbo and the other A/L subject to be from History, French, Yoruba Hausa, CRK/IRS, Literature-in-English and Govt/Economics.
(iii) University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) accepts A’ level or NCE (Merit) passes in at least one language and one other subject plus UTME requirement..
(iv) University of Lagos (UNILAG) requires the other Arts subjects to be chosen from History. Lit in English, CRK/IRS, Hausa, Yoruba, French and Govt/Economics. Also accepts NCE plus UTME requirements.
(v) Imo State University, Owerri (IMSU) accepts ‘A’ level/NCE (merit).
(vi) University of Benin (UNIBEN) requires at least two ‘A’ level pass in GCE or HSC or a recognised equivalent in any two Arts subject: it accepts NCE with an overall Merit level passes in any two Arts subject from a recognised institution.

What is WAEC, NECO, GCE Special Consideration (waiver) to study Igbo
(i) University of Lagos (UNILAG) require English Language, Igbo and any one of French, History, Lit in English, Yoruba Music and CRK/IRS Geography, Govt., Econs, Business Management, Commerce, Fine Arts and Biology.
(ii) University of Ibadan (UI) requires 5 or 6 ‘O’ level credit passes at one or two sittings to include English Language and two Arts other subjects one of which must be Igbo.
(iii) University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) requires 5 O’ Level credit passes to include English language and one Science subject. Candidates for Linguistics must possess a credit pass in Literature in English while candidates for linguistics and Nigerian Language must possess a credit pass in the Nigerian language to be combined with linguistics.
(iv) Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife (OAU) requires five credit passes in English language, one Arts subject and three other subjects from Sciences, Social Sciences or Arts.

What is Jamb UTME Special Consideration (waiver) to study Igbo
(i) University of Lagos (UNILAG) requires Igbo, and any two from Geography, Yoruba, History, Lit. in English, CRK/IRS, French, Govt / Economics, Commerce and Fine Arts and Biology.
(ii) University of Benin (UNIBEN) requires two Arts subjects and any other subject.
(iii) Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka (UNIZIK) accepts Chinese in lieu of Igbo.
(iv) University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) requires Igbo or any other Language and any two other subjects. For Linguistics (Option), requires Literature in English and 2 other subject.
