WAEC subject combination (requirements) for Art and Design

You’re expected to have at least 5 credits on the required WAEC subject combination needed to study Art and Design in Nigeria polytechnics. This subject combination is also applicable to other O’level exams such as NECO AND GCE. The required WAEC subject combination (O level requirement) for Art and Design must include:
English Language, Fine Art Mathematics and any two of the following: History/Government Chemistry/Physical Science, Biology/Agricultural Science, Literature in English, Clothing and Textiles, Religious Knowledge, Economics/Commerce Geography, Home Economics
These listed subjects are compulsory for anyone writing WAEC and other O level examinations. I will advise you to include a Language in your O level subjects. For the record, if you are one of those students seeking admission into any polytechnics in Lagos State, Yoruba Language is compulsory for Art and Design. JAMB UTME subject combination (requirements) for Art and Design

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) is a body responsible for your admission into the University or other institutions. Now I’m going to show you the compulsory JAMB subjects for Art and Design that you must register (English must be included because it is compulsory even though it may not be listed among the JAMB subjects below), and I will honestly advise you to aim for a score of 150 so that you can easily gain admission into any Polytechnics. Please note– English Language is compulsory. If Mathematics is not listed among the Jamb subject on this post, then Mathematics is not compulsory for this course. JAMB is not the only option to gain admission into Nigerian Universities to study Art and Design. Can a science or commercial student study Art and Design?

Yes! If you are a science or a commercial student, you can study Art and Design at the university provided you have the required subjects combination in your O level result. If you’re still in secondary school, you may find it difficult to change subjects to fit your desired course during WAEC registration because some schools may go against it. Alternative way to register the required subject combinations for Art and Design is through GCE.

Special Consideration

Now I am confident that you know the compulsory subjects needed to study Art and Design in polytechnics. But note this — Some Polytechnics may accept D7 or E8 in some a compulsory subject instead of Credit. And some may accept or reject two sittings. That is combinations of WAEC, NECO, or GCE results. U.T.M.E
a) The Polytechnic, Ibadan, Oyo State (The Polytechnic, Ibadan) requires credit pass in Nigerian Language and accepts Commerce, Economics. Also accepts a pass in Mathematics/English Language.
b) AUCHIPOL accepts a pass in English Language.
c) Institute of Management and Technology, Enugu State (IMT-ENU) offers it as Fine Arts.
d) Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja offers it as Arts and Industrial Design.
e) LASPOTEC requires credit in Art and Eng. Language.
f) Federal Polytechnic, Owerri, Imo State. requires credit passes in English Language, Mathematics and any three from History/Government, Literature in English, Clothing and Textiles, Chemistry/Physics, Economics/Commerce, Technical Drawing, Fine Arts.
g) Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Ondo State. (RUGIPO) requires five O’ level credit passes to include English Language, Fine Art/Visual Art/Technical Drawing and any three of History, Chemistry/Physics, Biology/Agricultural Science, Literature in English, Mathematics, Religious Knowledge, Clothing& Textile, Economics, Geography, Commerce and Government.
h) Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY) accepts five credits in not more than two sittings or four credits at one sittings with a minimum of pass in English Language.
i) AUCHI POLY requires five ‘O’ level credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, and any other three subjects at a sittings. Six credit passes including English Language and Mathematics at two sittings as course requirements.
j) Yaba College of Technology, Yaba, Lagos State (YABATECH) requires five (5) credit passes in English Language, Visual/Fine Art and any three (3) from History, Chemistry/Physics/Biology/Agric Science, Geography, Economics, Government, Commerce, Literature-In-English, CRS/Islamic Studies, Mathematics, Clothing & Textile.
k) Osun State Polytechnic, Iree in addition to course requirement accepts Dyeing and Bleaching, Civic Education/Government/History/Marketing/ Commerce, Animal Husbandry/Fisheries, General Metal Works, General Wood Work, Painting and Decoration, Craft Practice, Data Processing/ Computer Studies/ICT, Photography, Clothing and Textiles.
U.T.M.E. SUBJECTS
a) Federal Polytechnic, Owerri, Imo State. does not insist on Fine Arts as a UTME subject and also as UMTE requirement.
b) Federal Polytechnic, Nassarawa, Nassarawa State. accepts Biology/Agricultural Science, Chemistry. Does not accepts Fine Arts.
c) AUCHI POLY accepts any three subjects.
d) The Polytechnic, Ibadan, Oyo State (The Polytechnic, Ibadan) requires any three subjects from course requirement.
e) SOUNPOLY accepts any three subjects.
