Metallurgy is a domain of materials science that studies the physical and chemical behaviour of metallic elements, their intermetallic compounds and their mixtures called alloys. Metal plays a vital role in almost every aspect of modern life.

It also encompasses the study of exotic material, pure and combined which has application in various industries. It is one of the most important branches of engineering as modern applications nowadays require a material with high strength and low weight along with other factors.

Metallurgical Engineers extract, refine and recycle metals. They solve problems such as reducing corrosion, maintaining heat levels and increasing the strength of the product. They help develop or improve metals that are used in the healthcare, transportation, defence and entertainment industry.

The work of a metallurgical engineer impacts other engineering fields. They develop core materials that can enhance the function of many products and systems.

The three main branches of the Metallurgical Engineering Course are physical metallurgy, extractive metallurgy and mineral processing. Physical metallurgy deals with problem-solving i.e. development of metallic alloys needed for different types of manufacturing and construction. Extractive metallurgy involves extracting metal from ore. Mineral processing involves gathering mineral products from the earth’s crust.

JAMB subject combination for Metallurgical and Materials Engineering

For this degree, you are also required to register for 4 subjects and English is compulsory. More so, your JAMB score in addition to your POST UTME score will determine the cumulative score that the university will use to decide your candidacy for admission.
