WAEC subject combination (requirements) for Arabic Studies

You’re expected to have at least 5 credits on the required WAEC subject combination needed to study Arabic Studies in Nigeria universities. These subjects combination are also applicable to other O’level exams such as NECO AND GCE. The required WAEC subject combination (O level requirement) for Arabic Studies must include:

  1. English Language
  2. Arabic
  3. And three other relevant subjects.
  4. A trade subject


These listed subjects are compulsory for anyone writing WAEC and other O level examinations. I will advise you to include a Language in your O level subjects. JAMB UTME subject combination (requirements) for Arabic Studies

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) is a body responsible for your admission into the University or other institutions. Now I’m going to show you the compulsory JAMB subjects for Arabic Studies that you must register and I will honestly advise you to aim for a score of 200 and above in JAMB UTME instead of 180 to be on a safe side because anything short of that may deny you of Admission/Post UTME. Please note– If Mathematics is not listed among the Jamb subject on this post, then Mathematics is not compulsory for this course. Direct Entry requirement (required A-level result) to study Arabic Studies

If you’re one of those seeking admission into the University to further your studies, in addition to the required WAEC subjects combination for Arabic Studies, you are expected to have Two ‘A’ level passes in Arabic and any other Arabic Studies subject.

Arabic Studies is how many years course?

In Nigeria, if you gain admission to study Arabic Studies degree course at the university through JAMB UTME, you will study Arabic Studies for four years. If you gain admission through direct entry, you will study this course for three years. And of course there is room for more years if you have extension; the aftermath of carryover courses.

Arabic Studies is under which faculty in Nigeria?

According to JAMB, a body responsible for your admission into the University or other institutions, Arabic Studies is under the Faculty/School/College of Art but may be under a different faculty in some universities in Nigeria.

Can a science or commercial student study Arabic Studies?

Yes! If you are a science or a commercial student, you can study Arabic Studies at the university provided you have the required subjects combination in your O level result. If you’re still in secondary school, you may find it difficult to change subjects to fit your desired course during WAEC registration because some schools may go against it.

Also, during WAEC or NECO registration make sure you know which subjects are been registered for you because some secondary schools are ignorant about the importance of O level requirements for university courses. Another alternative way to register the required subject combinations for Arabic Studies is through GCE.

Special Consideration

Now I am confident that you know the compulsory subjects needed to study Arabic Studies in WAEC. But note this — Some Universities may accept D7 or E8 in some a compulsory subject instead of Credit. And some may accept or reject two sittings. That is combinations of WAEC, NECO, or GCE results.

What is Direct Entry Special Consideration (waiver) to study Arabic Studies
(i) Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria accepts: (a) Its Diploma at Credit level Arabic Studies. (b) NCE in Arabic with a minimum of Merit Pass.
(ii) University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) accepts Diploma at credit level plus UTME requirements.
(iii) Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin and University of Ibadan (UI) accept Diploma in Arabic and Islamic Studies.
(iv) Lagos State University, Ojo (LASU) accepts (a) Two ‘A’ Level Passes in Arabic and any other Arabic Studiess subject plus five other related Arabic Studiess subject at GCE ‘O’ Level or SSCE Examinations (b) Holders of Certificate issued by recognized Arabic Institution who may not have written Arabic at SSCE/GCE ‘O’ Level will be considered for admission subject to the fulfillment of other entry requirements NCE (Arabic) at Merit level is also acceptable. (c) Holders of Diploma in Arabic & Islamic Studies (DAI) with Upper Credit from Lagos State University, Ojo (LASU) or other recognised institutions with Credit Passes in Five other subjects including English at SSCE/GCE ‘O’ Level (d) Its own Foundation Programme Certificate.
(v) University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) accepts NCE (merit) in Arabic or Social Science subject.
(vi) University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) accepts relevant Diploma ofBayero University, Kano (BUK) University Kano satisfies both A/L and O/L admission requirements by Direct Entry. Considers candidates who do not offer Arabic at UTME but meet UTME entry requirements may be admitted into 100 level.
(vii) Kwara State University, Ilorin (KWASU) accepts IJMB, Cambridge, and Diploma in Arabic, NCE and SISC.
(viii) BUK accepts candidates with Credit pass in the Diploma in Arabic, Hausa and Islamic Studies.
(ix) University of Ibadan (UI) accepts NCE (merit) in Arabic and other Arabic Studiess or Social Science subjects.

What is WAEC, NECO, GCE Special Consideration (waiver) to study Arabic Studies
(i) Lagos State University, Ojo (LASU) accepts Islamic Studies in lieu of Arabic or accepts candidates who indicate interest in Foreign Language learning and possess basic knowledge or Arabic may be admitted.
(ii) Usumanu Danfodiyo University (UDUSOK) accept pass in English Language, NCE General English and a certificate in High Muslim Certificate.
(iii) Lagos State University, Ojo (LASU) accepts Certificate from recognized Arabic Institution who might have not written Arabic at SSCE ‘O’ level. (iv) University of Ibadan (UI) requires 5 ‘O’ level credit at one sittings or 6 ‘O’ level credit at two (2) sittings to include English Language, Arabic Studies and 3 or 4 other subjects in Arabic Studiess/Social Science.
(v) University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) accepts any other subject in lieu of Arabic.
(vi) Umar Musa Yar’ Adua University Katsina (UMYU) requires five credit at SSCE or equivalent including English Language, Arabic, Islamic Studies and two other relevant Arabic Studiess courses and a pass in Mathematics
(vii) Kaduna State University, Kaduna (KASU) and Umar Musa Yar’ Adua University Katsina (UMYU) may accept Higher Islamic Studies or Senior Islamic Studies Results.
(viii) Kwara State University, Ilorin (KWASU) requires credit in English, Arabic, IRS, plus any other two Arabic Studiess subjects. A certificate from a recognized Arabic school will be acceptable in lieu of O’ level Arabic
